मीनू दोसाभाई ने एनसीएसटी (NCST) के प्रारंभिक वर्षों के दौरान सॉफ्टवेयर प्रमोशन सेंटर (एसपीसी) और हार्डवेयर डिवीजन का नेतृत्व किया। उन्होंने परिसर के विकास और रखरखाव सहित एनसीएसटी की सभी इंजीनियरिंग जिम्मेदारियों का प्रबंधन करते हुए मुख्य अभियंता के रूप में भी काम किया। उनके काम की वजह से हमें 1986 में जुहू में एक बहुत अच्छी तरह से डिज़ाइन किया गया कैंपस मिला।
सलाहकार जिन्होंने एनसीएसटी कंप्यूटरों के उपयोगकर्ताओं का समर्थन किया था, सॉफ्टवेयर प्रमोशन सेंटर से थे। उन्होंने हजारों छात्रों और उन्नत पाठ्यक्रम के सैकड़ों प्रतिभागियों को कंप्यूटर पर अपना काम करने में मदद की।
ईआरनेट (ERNET) द्वारा उपयोग किए जाने वाले कंप्यूटर सिस्टम और सॉफ्टवेयर को स्थापित करने और बनाए रखने में मिनूजी के डिवीजन द्वारा किए गए कार्यों को मैं कृतज्ञतापूर्वक याद करता हूं। एनसीएसटी के नेटवर्क प्रभाग ने इस राष्ट्रव्यापी परियोजना में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई। ईआरनेट ने, एसपीसी के समर्थन से, 1986 में एनसीएसटी और आईआईटी (IIT) बॉम्बे के बीच एक ईमेल लिंक स्थापित किया था। इस परियोजना ने 1988 में भारत को इंटरनेट से जोड़ा; 1995 में वीएसएनएल (VSNL) के क्षेत्र में प्रवेश करने से पहले यह पूरे सात साल थे। ईआरनेट परियोजना के कर्मचारियों और एसपीसी के बीच सहयोग उस समय की मेरी सबसे सुखद यादों में से एक है!
मीनूजी ने 1964-5 में टीआईएफआर में सीडीसी-3600 का उपयोग करके सीखने में मेरी मदद की थी। मैं तब TIFR में इंटर्न के तौर पर काम कर रहा था और एम टेक प्रोजेक्ट कर रहा था। संस्थान उस समय एक बड़े कंप्यूटर, CD-3600 की अपेक्षा कर रहा था। डॉ पीवीएस राव और मीनूजी मशीन के लिए आवश्यक बड़े पैमाने पर बुनियादी ढांचे का निर्माण कर रहे थे। मुझे कभी-कभार मदद करने में खुशी होती थी।
मीनूजी एक मृदुभाषी सज्जन, हमेशा हंसमुख और मददगार थे। आज के समय में उनके जैसा इंसान मिलना बहुत मुश्किल है!
19 जनवरी 2023 को मीनूजी का निधन हुवा। उनके परिवार में उनकी पत्नी और दो बेटियां हैं।

MINOO MEHERWANJI DOSABHAI (MM DOSABHAI)
1930-2023
Minoo Dosabhai headed the Software Promotion Centre (SPC) and Hardware Division during the formative years of NCST. He also worked as the chief engineer, managing all engineering responsibilities of NCST including campus development and maintenance. Because of his work, we had a very well-designed campus in Juhu when we started out there in 1986.
Consultants who had supported users of NCST computers were from the Software Promotion Centre. They helped thousands of students and hundreds of advanced course participants do their work on computers.
I gratefully remember the work done by Minooji’s Division in setting up and maintaining the computer systems and software used by the ERNET. NCST’s Networks Division played a key role in this nation-wide project. ERNET, with the support of SPC, had set up an email link between NCST and IIT Bombay, in 1986. The project connected India to the Internet in 1988; this was a full seven years before VSNL entered the field in 1995. The cooperation between staff of the ERNET project and the SPC is one of my happiest memories of that time!
Minooji had helped me learn using the CDC-3600 in 1964-5 at TIFR. I was then working at TIFR as an intern doing my M Tech project. The Institute was expecting a big computer at that time, the CD-3600. Dr PVS Rao and Minooji were creating the massive infrastructure required by the machine. I was happy to lend a helping hand occasionally.
Minooji was a soft-spoken gentleman, always cheerful, and helpful. They don’t make them like him anymore!
Minooji passed away on 19th January 2023. He leaves behind his wife and two daughters.
