The Importance of Voice Assistants
Why are voice assistants very important to India? We use 22 major Languages in addition to English. There 13 scripts in use with these languages. They use alphabets that are more complex than the Roman alphabet. Most smartphones use the Roman alphabet keyboard; there are several crores of smartphones in use in India. If we work for it, we can make available good quality speech input and text-to-speech output in our languages. These facilities are easier to use than the keyboard and display.
How far can the technology of voice assistants go? We have to look at what is possible today in English. Voice Assistants on smartphones handle a number of tasks. My previous post on this blog has described how voice assistants help in doing searches over the Web.
Siri on Apple’s iPhone is well-known. Google Assistant on Android phones is equally well-known. Amazon Alexa is a similar voice assistant, available on a device like Echo Dot. They give a variety of information on demand. Let us ask voice assistant a few questions.

Siri: It doesn’t look like it is going to rain.

Google Asst: Right now, in Bengaluru it is 26 and mostly clear.

Google Assistant and Siri: No satisfactory answer.
They both failed to recognize the word Padmavat.
8. Set a timer alarm for nine thirty.
Siri: OK, I have set an alarm for 21:30
9. Cancel it.
Siri: I turned off your 21:30 alarm.
10. Show a photograph of Professor Menon.
Siri shows photographs of several people named Menon from the Web.

Such commands can be carried out if you install equipment connected over WiFi.
There has been good progress in this area. But, voice assistants need a few more years of development to be popular!
