Days for Artificial Intelligence
About
thirty years ago, I had met the Head of a Computer Science Department in a
University. He told me what subjects were in demand. He also told me about
various research projects in his department. I asked about Artificial
Intelligence. “No one wants to teach that subject”, he said, “and no student is
keen to study it”.
It was a
bad time for Artificial Intelligence. No exciting research had been reported
during that period. Big claims made earlier had ended in disappointments.
However,
some devoted researchers kept working on an old hope. Thy wanted to build
machines that can be trained by showing them examples. Suppose you give a
machine a photo of a handwritten PIN code along with a typed version of that
PIN code. Can the machine learn to read handwritten PIN codes? Obviously, the
machine cannot do this from one example. However, the machine learns to do a
fairly good job of recognizing handwritten PIN codes, when it is given
thousands of examples! “Yann LeCun” was a pioneer in this research (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yann_LeCun ).
After that,
other researchers started using these ideas and improving them. They showed
that machines can learn to recognize spoken sentences quite well. Crores of
people use this technology on their phones now. Then researchers showed that a
machine can learn to translate articles from one language to another. For
instance, this article was translated from English to Hindi by using the Google
translator. (My friend, Mr. Rohraji, edited the translated article and improved
it).
Because of
these advances, it is a good time for Artificial Intelligence now. Modern
computers are thousands of times faster than the old machines of 1960. They
store thousands of times more information. Training of machines has become
easier. Crores of photos and articles are available on the Internet. Machines
are also not very expensive. They are usually computer programs that are
written and loaded into common laptops and PCs.
No wonder
that every student wants to learn Artificial Intelligence now!
