एक कंप्यूटर आपातकाल

विदेश से एक दोस्त ने हाल ही में मुझे फोन किया। उसने मुझे बताया कि किसी ने उसे धोखा दिया

था। मेरे दोस्त का बेटा अपने कंप्यूटर के साथ काम कर रहा था, जब उसने बीपिंग शुरू कर दी और एक बड़ी चेतावनी चमकी! चेतावनी ने कहा, "आपका कंप्यूटर हैक किया गया है", "फोन नंबर ----- पर ----- कंपनी को कॉल करें! यह शीघ्र होना चाहिए! कुछ भी बंद न करें! अन्यथा, आपका कंप्यूटर और उससे जुड़े डिवाइस नष्ट हो जाएंगे।" मेरे दोस्त ने कंप्यूटर को बंद करने की कोशिश की, लेकिन यह बंद नहीं हुआ। उन्होंने दीवार स्विच का उपयोग कर बिजली बंद करने के बारे में नहीं सोचा था।

 संपर्क के लिए दिया गया नाम एक बड़ी सॉफ्टवेयर कंपनी थी जिसका सॉफ्टवेयर उस कंप्यूटर पर उपयोग में था। इससे उत्साहित, उसने फोन कॉल किया और किसी ऐसे व्यक्ति द्वारा अभिवादन किया गया जिसने "पुष्टि की" कि वह उसी बड़ी कंपनी से था। मेरे दोस्त ने समस्या की सूचना दी। आदमी ने सब कुछ सुना और कहा कि आजकल यह बहुत बार हो रहा है। समस्या को केवल उस देश की पांच विशेषज्ञ कंपनियों में से एक के द्वारा संशोधित किया जा सकता है। मेरे दोस्त ने उस आदमी से उन पांच कंपनियों में से एक का फोन नंबर देने का अनुरोध किया। आदमी ने खुशी से मेरे दोस्त को एक फोन नंबर दिया। मेरे दोस्त ने दिए गए नंबर पर एक फोन कॉल किया। उन्होंने उनसे समस्या का वर्णन करने के लिए कहा। विवरण सुनने के बाद, उन्होंने कहा कि वे कंप्यूटर को साफ कर देंगे, लेकिन इसके लिए 50,000 रुपये (उनकी मुद्रा में) खर्च होंगे। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि वे क्रेडिट कार्ड द्वारा भुगतान स्वीकार नहीं करेंगे। मेरे दोस्त ने उन्हें अपना बैंक खाता नंबर दिया जिस पर उन्होंने राशि चार्ज की।

मेरे दोस्त कई काम कर सकते थे। मैंने उनसे पूछा कि क्या उन्होंने पुलिस से शिकायत की है। उसने ऐसा करने का वादा किया। उन्होंने अपने कार्यालय में दूसरों को इस बुरे अनुभव का उल्लेख किया था। उन्होंने उनसे कहा कि वह अकेला नहीं था जिसे धोखा दिया गया था। एक और सहयोगी इसी तरह के अनुभव से गुज़र चुका था।

हमें इन सब से क्या सीखना चाहिए? हमें कंप्यूटर के माध्यम से हर संदेश पर भरोसा नहीं करना चाहिए। चोर अक्सर हमें संदेश भेजते हैं। हमें उन्हें पहचानना सीखना चाहिए। हमें डर के कारण, सोचने के बिना काम नहीं करना चाहिए। इस तरह की धोखाधड़ी न केवल कंप्यूटर संदेशों के माध्यम से होती है, यह सेल फोन संदेशों पर भी होता है।

The article in English follows:

A friend from abroad made a phone call to me recently. He told me that someone had cheated him.
My friend's son was working with their computer, when it started beeping and flashing a big
warning! "Your computer has been hacked", said the warning, "Call the ----- company on phone

number ----- . This is urgent! Don't switch off anything!  Otherwise, your computer and the devices
connected to it will be destroyed." My friend tried to switch the computer off, but it did not switch
off. He did not think of switching off power using the wall switch.

The name given for contacting was a big software company whose software was in use on that
computer. Encouraged by this, he  made the phone call and was greeted by someone who
"confirmed" that he was from that very same big company. My friend reported the problem. The
man heard all that and said that this is happening too frequently nowadays. The problem could
only be rectified one of the five specialist companies in that country. My friend requested the
man to give the phone number of one of those five companies. The man happily gave a phone
number to my friend.

My friend made a phone call to the number given. They asked him to describe the problem. After
listening to the details, they said they will clean up the computer, but that would cost Rs.50,000
(in their currency).  They also said that they would not accept payment by credit card. My friend
gave them his bank account number to which they charged the amount.

There are many things my friend could have done. I asked him if he had complained to the police.
He promised to do that. He had mentioned this bad experience to others in his office. They told him
he was not the only one who had been cheated. One more colleague had gone through the same
experience.

What should we learn from all this? We should not trust every message coming through the computer.
Thieves often send us messages. We should learn to identify such messages. We should not act
without thinking because of fear.

This kind of fraud occurs not only through computer messages; it  occurs over cell phone messages
as well.
