छोटे बच्चे नकल करके सीखते हैं।

 

छोटे बच्चे आपकी नकल करके ही समझ पाते हैं कि आप उनके सामने क्या कर रहे हैं। वे इस क्षमता के साथ पैदा होते हैं, इसलिए बहुत छोटे बच्चे भी इसे कर सकते हैं।

 

तो, अगली बार जब आप छोटे बच्चे के साथ खेलें, तो यह कोशिश करें: ऐसी जगह बैठें जहाँ बच्चा आपको देख सके। बच्चे को आरामदेह महसूस होना चाहिए और आस-पास की हरकतों और आवाज़ों से उसका ध्यान भंग नहीं होना चाहिए। शुरुआत में एक या दो बार अपने हाथों और बच्चे के हाथों को उठाकर दिखाएँ कि कहाँ देखना है। अपने शिक्षण सत्र को छोटा रखें। बच्चे के लिए दस मिनट से ज़्यादा समय तक आपके शिक्षण पर ध्यान केंद्रित करना मुश्किल होगा। कुछ बच्चों को कई शिक्षण सत्रों की ज़रूरत हो सकती है और सत्रों के बीच में थोड़ा अंतर भी चाहिए ।

 

आपको धैर्य की आवश्यकता है। कभी-कभी, मैं बच्चे को पहली बार मेरी नकल करवाने में एक घंटा लगा देता हूँ। बाद में यह आसान हो जाता है; बच्चा इसे एक खेल की तरह लेता है। अपनी जीभ बाहर निकालना और बच्चे से उसकी नकल करवाना एक और चुनौती है।

 

मैंने एक बार एक बच्ची को जीभ बाहर निकालना सिखाया। शाम को काम से घर आने पर बच्ची ने अपने दादा के सामने जीभ बाहर निकाली। उसने इसे तीन या चार बार दोहराया। दादा चिंतित हो गए, क्योंकि उन्हें लगा कि कुछ गड़बड़ है! दुर्भाग्य से, मुझे नहीं पता था कि दादाजी को चिंता न करने के लिए कैसे सिखाया जाए!

बच्चे हमारे साथ खेलकर बहुत कुछ सीखते हैं। अपने हाथ को ठंडे पानी में डुबोएँ और उस हाथ से बच्चे को छूते हुए कहें “ठंडा।” बच्चा तब तक शब्द दोहराने में असमर्थ हो सकता है जब तक कि वह लगभग एक वर्ष या उससे अधिक उम्र का न हो। हालाँकि, ऐसा लगता है कि वे बोलने से पहले दर्जनों शब्द सीख लेते हैं।

क्या हम दिखा सकते हैं कि बच्चा “ठंडा” जैसे शब्द को पहचानता है, भले ही वह इसे बोल न सके? अपने हाथों को ठंडे पानी में डुबोएँ और शब्द बोलें। बच्चे की प्रतिक्रिया देखें!

Young babies only understand what you are doing in front of them by imitating you. They are born with this ability, so even very young babies can do it.

So, next time you play with a young baby, try this: Sit where the baby can see you.  The baby should be comfortable and not be distracted by movements and sounds nearby. Lift your hands and the baby's hands once or twice initially to show where to look. Keep your teaching sessions short. It will be difficult for the baby to concentrate on your teaching for more than ten minutes. Some babies may need many teaching sessions, with gaps between sessions.

You need patience. Sometimes, I spend an hour getting a baby to imitate me the first time. It is easier later; the baby treats this as a game. Sticking your tongue out and having the baby imitate that is another challenge.

I once taught a baby girl to stick out her tongue. The baby stuck out her tongue at her grandfather when he came home from work in the evening. She repeated this three or four times. The grandfather was worried, as he thought that something was wrong! Unfortunately, I did not know how to teach a grandfather not to worry!

Babies learn a lot by playing with us. Dip your hand in cold water and touch the baby with that hand, saying “cold.” The baby may be unable to repeat the word unless she is approximately a year old or older. However, they seem to learn dozens of words before they can speak.

Can we show a baby recognizes a word like “cold” even if she cannot say it? Show your hands dipped in cold water and say the word.  Watch the baby's response!
