जयंत नार्लीकर 1938-2025

जयंत नार्लीकर एक खगोल भौतिक विज्ञानी, ब्रह्मांड विज्ञानी और संस्था निर्माता के रूप में जाने जाते हैं। यहाँ, मैं उनके और उनके सहयोगियों द्वारा भारत के शैक्षणिक नेटवर्क, ERNET के उपयोग को कॉलेजों और शोध समूहों के बीच फैलाने में निभाई गई भूमिका पर ध्यान केंद्रित करता हूँ, जिन्हें उनका इंटर-यूनिवर्सिटी सेंटर फॉर एस्ट्रोनॉमी एंड एस्ट्रोफिजिक्स (IUCAA) सेवाएं प्रदान करता है। IUCAA ERNET का शुरुआती उपयोगकर्ता था और इसने पुणे और उसके आसपास के अन्य शैक्षणिक और शोध संस्थानों के साथ अपने नेटवर्किंग संसाधनों को साझा किया।

नारलीकर और उनके सहयोगियों ने खगोल विज्ञान और खगोल भौतिकी में अनुसंधान के लिए उन्नत सूचना और संचार प्रौद्योगिकी उपकरणों का उपयोग करने में भी बहुत योगदान दिया है। उनकी वर्चुअल ऑब्जर्वेटरी परियोजना शोधकर्ताओं को कच्चा डेटा उपलब्ध कराती है। अनुसंधान के लिए ICT उपकरणों पर IUCAA के प्रशिक्षण पाठ्यक्रम लोकप्रिय रहे हैं।

एक छोटी सी घटना मेरी याददाश्त में अच्छी तरह से अंकित है। हेली का धूमकेतु 1986 में आखिरी बार हमारे पास आया था। जयंत के पिता प्रोफ़ेसर वीवी नार्लीकर उस समय बॉम्बे में थे। वे बनारस हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय में गणित विभाग के प्रमुख और प्रोफेसर के रूप में सेवा करने के बाद सेवानिवृत्त हुए थे, और बाद में पूना विश्वविद्यालय में प्रोफेसर के रूप में। वे सामान्य सापेक्षता के विशेषज्ञ भी थे।

एक शाम, मैं टीआईएफआर आवासीय भवन के स्तंभों के साथ चल रहा था और मैंने देखा कि बड़े नार्लीकर बच्चों से बात कर रहे थे और धूमकेतु की ओर इशारा कर रहे थे। मैंने उन्हें यह कहते हुए सुना कि जब 2061 में यह फिर से आएगा तो वे वहां नहीं होंगे, लेकिन बच्चे इसका स्वागत करने के लिए वहां होंगे। खगोलीय पैमाने पर पचहत्तर साल एक छोटा समय है!

Jayant Narlikar

Jayant Narlikar is well-known as an astrophysicist, cosmologist, and institution builder. Here, I focus on the role played by him and his colleagues in spreading the use of India’s academic network, ERNET, among colleges and research groups that his Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) serves. IUCAA was an early user of ERNET and shared its networking resources with other academic and research institutions in and around Pune.
Narlikar and his colleagues have also contributed a lot to using advanced Information and Communication Technology tools for research in astronomy and astrophysics. Their Virtual Observatory Project makes raw data available to researchers. IUCAA’s training courses on ICT tools for research have been popular.

A small incident is well etched in my memory. Haley’s Comet visited us last time in 1986. Prof VV Narlikar, Jayant’s father, was in Bombay then. He had retired after service as a Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics at Benares Hindu University, and later as a Professor at the University of Poona.  He was also an expert on General Relativity.

One evening, I was walking along the colonnade of the TIFR residential building and saw the elder Narlikar talking to children and pointing to the comet. I heard him say that he would not be there when it comes around again in 2061, but the children would be there to welcome it. Seventy-five years is a short time on the astronomical scale!
