Searching the Web for information is an important skill. It requires knowledge and experience. It is often a necessary skill in this century. I will write a few articles on this topic in this blog. These articles will introduce basic ideas which will be useful to many readers.

Suppose you wish to get information on Dengue fever. You can use a search engine like Google or Bing. They will display a query input box in which you can type in the word Dengue. The search engine will find many articles on Dengue for you. It will short descriptions of each article – these are called snippets. The first line of a snippet is usually the “anchor text”. It is a coloured, underlined, line of text like this:

It is a line of hypertext. If you click on it, the browser will take you to an article it is pointing at. The visible part of the hypertext is the anchor text.Along with the anchor text is a hidden part. It is a URL (Uniform Record Locator), the precise address needed by your browser to locate an article. You can see the second line of the snippet below. It is an URL, also colored and underlined. You can click on it too to go to the article. The whole snippet looks like this:

New ideas have been built into search engines over the years. For instance, now, they find out the location from which you do the search. If you type “Times” into your search engine. You would get information on the Times of India newspaper. If someone does this search from a computer in London, he will get information on the Times of London newspaper.

Using solar energy through an UPS 

The solar panel produces electrical energy from the sunlight. Every year millions of Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs) are sold; Therefore, their cost has decreased. You can use an UPS to store electrical energy from solar panels in the day. The stored energy can be used later, when necessary. UPSs made by good companies come with a warranty, which also covers their batteries.

Solar UPS systems take electricity directly from solar panels for charging their batteries. They have a charging controller that decides how to charge the battery. When solar power is available, it becomes the first choice. The second option for charging is to use power from house wiring. When power goes out, some LED lamps can be run by the UPS. Output from the UPS is at 230 volt. Therefore, we can run some common devices using UPS. You can charge your cell phone, recharge a tablet computer or laptop.

So far people in villages have been suffering from power cuts. Solar UPSs will make it easy for them to deal with power cuts. Using a solar UPS for lighting provides significant advantages for small shops. Solar energy systems can be useful for street lighting in remote locations. Reliable lighting in rural hospitals from an UPS would be very valuable.

The UPS market in India is already worth several thousand crores per year; but it provides services to large-scale urban clients. Solar UPS units in rural areas are practically absent. Selling and installing solar UPS systems will soon become a big business. This business will create several lakhs of jobs over the entire country.

The Big Enemy - TB 

March 24 every year is World Tuberculosis Day. There is nothing special about that day for Tuberculosis (टीबी). It kills over 1300 Indians every day; every minute, TB kills one person.  Five lakh Indians die every year because of TB. How did I find places where this information was available? The best way to look for information in Hindi is to type “query words” in Hindi. These words indicate the topic on which you seek information. I used the browser on my Laptop and entered the following into the search window:

What is exciting about all this? The Internet and the Web are in fact useful to people speaking Hindi. More and more knowledge and information should become available in our own languages. Our focus here is on this knowledge and information.

A disease like TB should not be there. It is particularly dangerous for the poor who do not get adequate food. TB kills more men than women; perhaps this is because more men smoke cigarettes or bidis. Have you seen children who have lost their father because of TB? It is tragic even to think of them. The disease was treatable by a number of drugs earlier; but now, the TB bacteria are becoming resistant to these drugs. So, treatment becomes more difficult. 

I hope that many students who read this will decide to study further and do research on TB. I hope that they will discover a treatment to stop the spread of this disease.

It detects many types of TB reliably. It is faster than currently available tests.

हम में से बहुत से हमारी मातृभाषा में लिखने में संकोच करते हैं। हमें अंग्रेजी में लिखना आसान लगता है; लेकिन अस्सी प्रतिशत लोग अपनी मातृभाषा में पढ़ना पसंद करते हैं।

मैं विज्ञान, प्रौद्योगिकी, इंजीनियरिंग और गणित पर लिखने का प्रयास करूंगा।

How can we make the Internet more useful to Indians? One way to do this is to write in Hindi and in regional languages. The Internet would be more useful if more knowledge becomes available in Indian languages.

Many of us are hesitant to write in our mother tongue.  We find it easier to write in English; but eighty percent of the people prefer to read in their mother tongue.

I will try to write on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  

We will give the English version as well. Why do we do that? Many of you are learning English.   First, read the article in one language; then in the second language. You will find that ideas become clearer. You will also learn new words.

Remember, you don’t need a computer to read these web pages. You can read them on a cell phone using the browser. Just enter hindimestem.blogspot.com in the address line.
